/// FAQ ///

  • Re-Born Automotive, where did that name come from?

When we decided to open shop, we were sitting around one evening trying to come up with a clever name, and after previously working at a shop named Peace It Together, thought that it needed to be kinda out there. We were asking ourselves what is our motto, and we came up with "Let Us Put New Life Into Your Car," and from that came Re-Born Auto Repair. There was no religious connotation at the time. Though I am a Christian, that is not what we were implying.

  • Do you offer a shuttle service?

You bet. We have a VW Beetle TDI (that runs on Bio Diesel) we call the "Shuttle Bug," and we recently added a Scion XB, we call the "Shuttle Box." We are available to shuttle you whenever you need, though a little notice is nice so we can arrange our schedule.

  • Your Warranty, how good is it?

We offer an 18-month, unlimited mileage warranty that is one of the finest in the industry. We know that parts are not perfect, and neither are people. And since our people install parts, there is a chance of error at times. But, we stand behind our work, and will do everything possible to ease the pain in the event of a warranty issue. Please see our warranty page.

  • What cars do you work on?

We work on most European, Japanese and British cars, including Audi, BMW, Mini, VW, Volvo, Saab, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mazda, Isuzu, Mitsubishi, Infinity, Lexus, Acura, Subaru, Suzuki, Land Rover, Jaguar, MG, Triumph, Austin Martin, and Austin Healy.

  • British cars, really?

Yes, we work on many British sports cars, Land Rovers and Jaguars. Dave, our British specialist, is one of the most knowledgeable British techs in Portland.

  • Do you work on American cars?

Yes, we are now servicing 1996 and later American cars. We are tooled up and have several technicians working for us who are quality American car technicians.

  • Oil changes, should we go to a Quick Lube?

No! We have strong opinions on this. While up front it may seem cheaper, we've found it doesn't provide the quality service your car needs in the long run. For example, their filters are a low-cost, low-quality part. We use original equipment or better filters.  We have seen many poor quality services done by the Quick Lubes, and often seen them recommend services and fluid exchanges that simply do not need to be performed. Let Re-Born do your oil change service. Our prices are reasonable for the level of service you receive, we won't sell you services you don't need, and we'll have records on your car to properly track your services needed. (I told you we were passionate about the subject!)

  • Were you really voted one of the top three shops for imports in Portland?

Yes! And we are proud of it. We work hard to be fair and honest and provide the highest level of service available. We know we're not perfect -- we're human after all -- but we make every effort to be as good as possible. If we do make an error, it will be rectified in a timely and fair manner.

  • I have a new car, do I need to go to the dealer for service?

No! Another emotional subject. They want you to believe that, but it's simply not true. We can provide service on your car from the day you drive it off the dealer's lot. Your full manufacturer's warranty stays 100% in effect. It's the law, so don't let them mislead you. You can bring your new car to us, a local independent service facility that cares about you and your car. We know your name and call you by it. You are not just a body with a car that makes us money, you are a person who has needs that we will meet. We want you as a client. If you have more questions on the subject, give us a call.  We'll be happy to discuss it with you.

  • But they offer free oil changes, what do you say about that?

Give us a call, we'd be happy to discuss this with you. I think we have the perfect answer for that!

  • ASE certification, is it important?

You bet! All of our technicians are ASE certified technicians, four of whom are ASE Master technicians. ASE, Automotive Service Excellence, is a certification program for automotive technicians. ASE's mission is to improve the quality of vehicle repair and service through the testing and certification of repair and service professionals. For more on ASE, please visit their website.

  • Do you have a mascot?

A funny question, but you bet. Charlie is our shop dog and he'd love to meet you. He's a friendly little bugger who loves when his friends bring him biscuits.

  •  Ecological Certified Facility, what is it and is it important?

Our environment belongs to us all, and we feel it is our responsibility to take care of it for you and for us. We are proud to be a member of this stringent program that reduces the toxic load auto shops can leave on the environment. We recycle all of our waste, from fluids to paper, we have containment systems in place in the event of a spill, we use all environmentally safe cleaning agents and control our water runoff. We use energy-efficient lighting and heating. For more on this program, please visit their website.

  • I'm a busy person, can I schedule online?

You bet you can schedule online.  Request an appointment date and time and we'll make every effort to meet your request. Click here to schedule online.

  • My "Check Engine" light just came on. Should I panic?

In most cases no, don't panic, but get your car into us as soon as possible. The computer on today's cars is continuously monitoring vital engine sensors, inputs, outputs, ignition and emission control devices. When the light comes on, it has detected a malfunction in one of these vital systems and is warning you, the driver, that the systems need to be inspected and the problem diagnosed. Typically, the car will still run without damage but it is in your best interest to get it inspected right away. Feel free to give us a call if you have questions on this annoying little light.

  • A "MotorVac," what the heck is that?

A MotorVac carbon cleaner cleanses an engine's fuel system of dirt, gum and carbon deposits that slowly deteriorate its performance, economy and emissions. Its effectiveness has been proven and we and many happy customers can vouch for it. We recommend that this service be performed every 30,000 to 60,000 miles depending on the vehicle. Some cars are more prone to carbon buildup. You will be amazed at the difference this service will make in engine performance. Ask for more details on this valuable service.

  • Transmission "transfusion," come again?

It's a funny term, but literally that's what it is. Most transmissions hold around 12 quarts of transmission fluid. A normal or typical service, where the pan is drained or removed to drain the oil, only drains about 3-4 quarts of oil, leaving in 8 or more quarts of old, dirty fluid. With a "transfusion," using a pump-driven flush machine, we can completely exchange all your fluid in the transmission. In my opinion, this is without a doubt one of the most valuable services that can be done on a car with an automatic transmission. Dirty or old fluid is the most common causes of transmission failure.

  • Coolant exchange vs. drain and fill?

Again, when you simply drain and fill the cooling system, you are only draining what's in the radiator, which is not even half of the system. With a coolant exchange, our machine drains the entire cooling system, performs a leak and pressure test of the cooling systems hoses, gaskets and clamps and then completely fills the cooling system to its proper level and mixture. Coolant or "antifreeze" wears down and loses its effectiveness to properly protect the metals in your engine. Another valuable service.

  • Why should I choose Re-Born over other shops?

Because we try really hard to be the best. We are a small local Portland business that relies on its customers to keep our doors open so we can provide great service. We don't have a national chain backing us. We don't have a huge advertising budget paid for by corporate. We rely on you and your good word telling your friends about us. We contribute to the community and plan on being around for along time. When we do good, let us know. If we don't, more importantly, let us know. We can't fix a problem if we don't know about it. We have worked very hard to build a reputation as a fair and honest business, offering the finest customer service possible.

  • Is Wi-Fi available in your lobby?

Yes, we have wireless access free of charge.
